Time-frequency analysis of rhythmic masticatory muscle activity.

The aim of this study was to develop and validate under laboratory conditions an algorithm for a time-frequency analysis of rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA). The algorithm baseband demodulated the electromyographic (EMG) signal to provide a frequency versus time representation. Using appropriate thresholds for frequency and power parameters, it was possible to automatically assess th...

SEMG-based prediction of masticatory kinematics in rhythmic clenching movements

This paper investigated the ability of a hybrid time-delayed artificial neural network (TDANN)/autoregressive TDANN (AR-TDANN) to predict clenching movements during mastication from surface electromyography (SEMG) signals. Actual jaw motions and SEMG signals from the masticatory muscles were recorded and used as output and input, respectively. Three separate TDANNs/AR-TDANNs were used to predic...

Bruxism. Masticatory implications and anxiety.

In this study we investigate the phenomenon of bruxism, defined as the act of clenching and/or grinding the teeth, a habit that compromises the orofacial region. It is often associated with emotional aspects, such as anxiety and stress, and may result in alterations to orofacial structures, functional modifications and social repercussions. The aim of this study was to determine a possible asso...

Bruxism physiology and pathology: an overview for clinicians.

Awake bruxism is defined as the awareness of jaw clenching. Its prevalence is reported to be 20% among the adult population. Awake bruxism is mainly associated with nervous tic and reactions to stress. The physiology and pathology of awake bruxism is unknown, although stress and anxiety are considered to be risk factors. During sleep, awareness of tooth grinding (as noted by sleep partner or fa...

Masseter EMG activity during sleep and sleep bruxism.

The masseter muscle is involved in the complex and coordinated oromotor behaviors such as mastication during wakefulness. The masseter electromyographic (EMG) activity decreases but does not disappear completely during sleep: the EMG activity is generally of low level and inhomogeneous for the duration, amplitude and intervals. The decreased excitability of the masseter motoneurons can be deter...
